I came here from Mahwah NJ, looking for a barber who can both cut my long hair and fade my taper in. I have found the one. Emmy was outstanding. Just what I was looking for. If you are a man with long hair like me, she will take care of you. My hair has never felt more good. Thank you Emmy and I will be back soon. Keep in mind, if you have long hair, call and tell them you have long hair and wanna trim it, so they can book enough time for you. Very nice little location and great vibe. Very talented group of barbers. Staff is attentive, and barbers are well trained and skilled. The shop is always clean, neat, and the environment is always welcoming. The place is always busy whenever I go, and the barbers all greet you when you walk in. Places like this are far and few between. Definitely one of a kind, and my go-to. Also, it helps that they have two locations in JC, so it's super convenient, even coming from out of the area or Manhattan.read more

I have been going to Virile (in both Jersey City locations) for years now. Each time, I'm welcomed warmly and offered a drink. The place is always clean, the staff friendly, and the barbers skillful. I am always impressed by how busy it is, so I always make sure to schedule my appointments around a month out. Andre is my go-to and one of the master barbers, so I know his schedule fills up fast. The quality of the haircut is top notch and I always appreciate the clean, slick, straight razor shave whenever I'm there to trim my beard. I've been recommending this place to everyone I can because I think the whole place is top-notch. It's even more fun if you can get there when Chunk, the barbershop dog, is holding court. He's a hoot.read more

A little pricier than some strip mall place-but they truly spend a lot of time giving you the exact haircut you desire. Just make sure you have an appointment-they’re so popular that walk-ins really aren’t an option.The drink is a nice bonus.read more

I began searching for a barber about 12 months before my wedding, not knowing my wedding would be in 12 months. I went to a handful of places in Jersey City before Virile, although once Emmy became my barber, I looked no further. The experience is always great, so much so that I booked face shaves and beard trims for my wedding with my groomsmen, father, and now father-in-law. We had a great time, as did our photographer, who captured the dapper moments as we got cleaned up.read more

Great barber shop--contemporary service and style with old-school flair. The barbers do a great job and are a nice bunch of people. It's the sort of place you want to hang out for a chat in addition to the cut, and it doesn't hurt that customers are offered a shot of whiskey or a beer when they arrive.read more

I went to this barber shop for haircuts over the three years I lived in Jersey City. Just the best experience. Rich gave me an absolutely perfect cut every time. Probably the best place in jersey city for men's hair cuts. The rates are varied based on experience if the barber, but even the "apprentice barbers" give great haircuts and you shouldn't be worried about booking with them.read more

First time taking a haircut at Virile Barber & Shop and I was fairly satisfied with my haircut!I booked an appointment with Dave and I am glad I made the right choice! I decided to chop up my 1 year worth of hair after growing it during lockdown I have straight hair and the length was up to my shoulders. I wanted a clean cut that was versatile and long enough to slick my hair back and Dave did not disappoint. I have been coming here for more than a year now and had very good experience. Today I had an appointment and I was running late. I had called them to let them know that I will be running late by 3-5 mins. They mentioned if i go beyond 5 mins then they would be able to accommodate me. I completely understand that if I'm late they don't want to make the next person wait. I reach exactly by 5 mins and they said they won't take me(seems like the barber stepped out) and the only option is reschedule for another day. If they had mentioned that they won't take me even if it is 5 mins I would have returned home from half way. Guess you lost an client.read more

Meh - these guys take themselves too seriously. Most importantly though Haircut wasn’t great. I wasn’t a fan of the atmosphere - I’m sure many people like this kind of place, but it’s too stuffy for me. An apron to cut hair? I don’t know not my thing. Wasn’t going to leave a review but having a moment of frustration and still not confident enough to go out from the experience and it’s been two weeks.First the good: barber could not have been nicer. I made the choice to select what was clearly one of the newer barbers in training as labeled on the website, and he and the entire staff could not have been more nice.The tuff part: Was very particular about a part of my hair I did not want cut and made it very very clear not to cut it as I had been working hard to regrow it and I brought that up many times— to the point where i held the piece of hair and said “do not cut this at all” and he agreed. I looked on in deep shock as he, in the middle of the haircut, grabbed the entire part and cut it clean off making it worse than it’s ever been and all my progress regrowing it has been restarted. It was cut down to basically the scalp. To make matters worse in an effort to balance he replicated the problem on the the other side. It’s been hard blow to my confidence since then and I’ve never felt so insecure about my cut. I do not think this was malicious obviously but the blatant disregard for the single thing I very clearly asked not to do has led me to feel very frustrated. There’s a difference between making a mistake due to inexperience vs making a mistake due to genuinely not listening or disregarding directionsAll the other customers in there seemed to be regulars and I can tell by the reviews this is not the norm. My only advice to the establishment would be to emphasize to the earlier in their career barbers the importance of actually listening and echoing back and confirming how the cut should be done prior to the haircut, and to customers to be clear before, during and continuously throughout the cut.read more

Cute atmosphere. Sadly the haircut I got wasnt great. I didnt realize it was a 30 min time slot which felt a bit rushed. The fade was ok but the trim was a bit slapdashed and uneven with pieces sticking out if you look close. The barber was nice.read more

You can’t go wrong getting a haircut with Julian (if you can get an appointment). Every cut is exceptional. I have straight, thin hair. Very few barbers know how to cut it as well as he does.
