Balkan Barber Shop has an old school yet contemporary style with a lot of wood and exposed brick. They use scissors whenever possible to provide a really personalized handcrafted touch. Haircuts are finished with a clean line using a straight edge razor, a blow dryer and high-end hair products when appropriate. Every appointment starts with a consultation.

I visited for the 1st time today and the reviews are spot on. Jersey City has many barber shops and this place is the first I've found that can cut my hair (men's medium length) and provide a perfect fade. Prior to my haircut, I watched as customers left and each barber made sure their customers were happy. In addition, the owner sincerely cares about each customers experience. He asked me multiple times throughout the process if I was satisfied. Online booking is a huge bonus as well. This is my new spot.read more

First, I would like to start by saying the style and vibe of the shop is just so unique and welcoming. The staff is extremely friendly and easy to talk to. You can see how much they truly love their jobs and making the people who walk in there happy. Al, the owner of the shop, is an amazing barber and you can see how much he cares for his customers and makes sure they walk out happy. I started getting my hair cut by Al a few months ago when my barber of 10+ years had to take a leave of absence due to medical reasons. For anyone who has had the same barber for that long they understand how difficult it is to find a new barber. A few buddies recommended Al and let me tell you, I have gotten the best haircuts of my life. I am not an easy customer to accommodate. Every time I go in I have a different way I want my hair cut, whether that be from the length of the top to how high I want my skin fade to go. And Al, ever the professional has the conversation with me and gives his honest opinion and I am beyond satisfied with every haircut. He is a true professional in every sense of the word and a master using both the scissors and clippers. This is not to mention the environment of the shop, which is extremely welcoming. On one occasion my pregnant wife tagged along and not only did all of the barbers congratulate her and I but the other patrons did as well. This barbershop has the feel of an old time neighborhood shop in the sense that everyone is super friendly and welcoming. This was my honest review of a shop that I really enjoy being a customer of, an extremely talented barber, and an all around decent guy!read more

Al and his shop are the best in the area HANDS DOWN. I literally have gone to 25 different barbers over the years and he is the only one that GETS IT and is a good person. Recently switched my barber to Balkan and i have not been disappointed. I am usually skeptical about changing barbers frequently but I got haircut with Al here and loved it. I have been there multiple times now and will definitely go back. Al wont let you leave the shop until you are satisfied with their service. Lovely guys, great service. You may wanna take appointment way too early as they are booked most of the times.read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Balkan! Cynthia is amazing and even though I felt as if she was a bit rushed by her coworkers she kept steady and still maintained her efficiency and gave me an amazing haircut. I have been going to Balkan Barber shop ever since I moved to Jersey City. You need to book an appointment in advance but it's possible to get a walk-in as well. They don't rush through a hair cut and have been consistently great at giving a haircut. I usually go for Al. The shop itself is very pristine and the staff is friendly. Highly recommend it.read more

Don’t judge a book by its cover. I was a little nervous when I walked into this barbershop the gentlemen were a little older so I didn’t think they could handle my hair. But let me tell you with age comes experience. Alex cut my hair and I can hands down say it was the best haircut I received in years it was almost like he has been cutting my hair for years and knew exactly how I wanted it cut without even explaining much. The first thing you notice when you walk in this quaint barber shop is charm. The charm just smacks you in the face as it emanates from the brick walls, to the warm light, to the very carefully curated decorations. Unless the barbers are victim to their high degree of focus, you are also always greeted warmly. I've rarely had to wait to get seated as they are always on time, and when I have waited it has only been for a few minutes. Overall they are professional, punctual, friendly, and make you feel comfortable, which is everything I want from a barber shop. Oh yeah and of course, my hair always looks great when I leave. Before meeting Al, the quaint shop was a hairdresser that never seemed to be open. As soon as Al took over, the entire block of Barrow between Columbus and Newark seemed to be reinvigorated with new life and energy. He turned the spot around overnight and developed a sophisticated barbershop that caters to the much-needed market in-between the extremes of prices offered in the local Jersey City neighborhoods. Since opening, I've brought my son, from infant to toddler, to hang out practically daily, and watched Balkan Barber grow. Over a couple years, Al added two new chairs and went through a few hair stylist professionals, all of whom dedicated their time to stay up-to-date with cutting techniques and education in their trade. With each friendly stylist having their own methods and styles, the Balkan Barbers (Al and, as of this review, Alex, Reza, Desiree) have earned my trust to cut my hair anytime. And while I've seen some crazy situations at barbershops over the years, the other day, I've recently experienced probably the most impressive thing I will ever see, EVER. I was in Al's chair getting cleaned and a fly the size of pea started flying right between myself and mirror... Al mumbles something about fly and quickly snaps his forward. The fly seemed to bounce in midair and I realized that Al actually hit the fly and managed to snip off the wing and practically cut the fly in half! I've only seen that done in the Karate Kid... my barber is officially Mr. Miyagi!read more

Decided to come here to get a cut once they re-opened. Like most during quarantine, my hair was extremely long and Alex did a masterful job cutting it just the way I liked it. Excellent barber that I would highly recommend to all in JC!! I just had my first hair cut at Balkan with Al - last appointment of the day, on a Friday, and I was still given the most impeccable service as if I was the first appointment of the day. A great job by Al and excellent service. Al is a true professional in his field - he is a master barber. My hair looks exactly as I wanted it and my style is not an easy cut. Al took a lot of time to ensure everything was immaculate, checking multiple times throughout my cut. The shop is extremely well maintained and all precautions are taken related to COVID; A very welcoming and clean environment.Great value for money - they should charge more!! I LOVE this place-- the haircuts are great, the ambiance is old school barber meets steampunk cool-- (they even have an antique cash register that they actually use)!I took a friend in there to get spruced up, and they made him look fantastic.**Best of all though is the owner AL (who is one of their master barbers), whom i stop by to chat with when I'm nearby, just because he's such a warm, friendly guy. I've had haircuts from multiple barbers here, including the owner, and they always do an awesome job. I initially went to them because I lived down the street, but now I live ~30 minutes away and STILL drive over here for an appointment. Super friendly people and the pricing is fair compared to other places in the neighborhood that show less attention to detail in a haircut.Getting an appointment online is a breeze, but make sure you lock yours in at least a week in advance because they do fill up.read more

I've been going to John now for 5 years. Part of the reason I never left a review is because I'm selfish, and don't need him getting more booked up than he already is. John gives THE best cut, hands down, no questions asked. Top to bottom everything you want in a barber. I don't want to hear about the guy who's been cutting your hair, in your neighborhood, since you were 8, but to this day still can't use scissors. STOP.
