Matthew's career began at the young age of 15, where he was trained by some of the top educators in Europe. There, his skills and techniques were recognized. Coming to NYC, Matthew gained the opportunity to further expand his skillset together with other masters of the craft. He specializes in mens cuts, dry cuts, razor cuts, scissor cuts, and keratin treatments. Having been located in some of the world's foremost cultural hubs, Matthew has worked on popular actors, opera singers, dancers, and musicians from all around the world. As there are no teen perspectives, I figured I’d offer my own. Matthew is a phenomenal hair stylist, with a cutting technique that I’ve yet to see elsewhere. Although traditional barbers are the default option, I found myself never getting the cut I asked for and envisioned. With Matthew, I’ve yet to get a bad cut. He is leaps and bounds more trust-worthy and consistent than any barber. When he says this salon is for both men and boys, he means it. His ability does not change based on age. My entire life I’ve been getting my hair cut from the local barber and never really put too much thought into it. But about a year ago I met Mathew and he told me he was a stylist and with my hair type he can do some pretty cool things. So I gave it a try. It was a totally different experience then what I was accustomed to. He is like an artist of hair! I was amazed , and my wife was very happy too. She loved my new hair style. Matt is the man. Been using him for 4 years now. There is no cookie cutter hair cut with him. He helps you customize your cut to your hair type, texture etc. He won’t let you do a hair style that is not meant for you. I love that. Who else does that these days? First time going to a men’s salon (as there aren’t many nearby), and was not disappointed! Matthew Alain Men’s Hair Lounge is AMAZING! I have gone to so many hair salons/barbers in the area. Some were terrible and others were just okay. I just brought my son to Matthew Alain’s for a cut, and can honestly say it’s the best cut ever and far exceeded my expectations! I loved the work on my hair so much the first time and have now been here a second time. Matthew does a phenomenal job...with everything! My cut looks awesome! But beyond that I've had him color my hair and also got a keratin treatment. He did an amazing job. I also want to thank him for squeezing in an extra treatment and being accommodating. Matthew’s barbershop is extremely well kept and a lovely place to have your hair taken care of. He is always hospitable as he offers me coffee every cut. I have yet to get a cut I did not like and get compliments on the styling often. He will work with you to make your hair as you wish- A stylist vs a barber is night and day. This was my first haircut in about five months, I was letting my hair grow out after a bad experience with a different barber. I was hesitant to cut my hair because I did not want another chopped haircut, but I found Matthew on Instagram and decided to take the leap and make an appointment. When I arrived Matthew greeted me with a very clean/organized lounge and immediately made me more comfortable, we were able to work together and decided on a haircut that would look best for me. This review is long overdue. Matthew is super talented. Not pretentious. Just really down to earth and knows what he’s doing. My son and I were using one of the local Merrick barbershops and couldn’t stand how pompous and arrogant they were. Matthew makes you feel at home and is a true artist. Rarely do we wait more than a couple minutes— that’s because he’s running an efficient business and schedules his appointments in advance. Highly recommend Matthew if you’re looking for something new. Something better!!!read more

I wanted to get a slightly different hairstyle than what I usually get and I decided to visit Matthew’s shop based on all the good reviews I’ve seen and he did not disappoint at all. This was probably the best experience I’ve ever had at a barber/salon, he was very welcoming and extremely professional the whole time. He was able to help me find a hairstyle that better suited my head and I was very very happy with the end result. I will definitely be coming back for future haircuts. Just make sure to book an appointment ahead of time since he can get fully booked for days at a time.read more

After a long search, and countless Long Island Barbershops that only seem to know how todo the same one style cut with buzzers I found Matthew. There is such a clear difference in skill level that was immediately obvious from the initial consultation, his recommendations on a new style (and how to fix the disaster from previous Barbers), his use of shears to cut and texturize, and superb use of the buzzer for an amazing fade and blend. Matthew now has a customer for life. If you are looking for a great cut and style, stop wasting time on these run of the mill, fly by night Barbers and invest in a real stylist, you owe it to yourself.read more

If you are looking for new place for a haircut on the south shore of Long Island your search is over - Matthew Alain’s brings the sophistication of a Manhattan men’s lounge but with a neighborhood feel (with reasonable prices) to Bellmore/Merrick. I was hesitant trying something new after +25 yrs with the same style but Matthew’s extensive experience, suggestions and the incredible cut by Donna resulted in an outstanding result. Finally a barber for men that has the highest standard for quality and style that I have come across in all of LI!Lana, the perfect blend of experience, skill and personality, gave me what is now my favorite haircut of all my 38 years. She made me feel right at home and revealed herself as a true artist, seeing the potential in my very wild pre-cut hair condition. I was also impressed that she proactively sought collaborative input from the shops owner Matthew, who is an exceptional host and clearly a talented master of the craft.All that said, the entire experience was a real joy and I’ll be going back time and time again.My only critique is that I think they should consider adding a drop of eucalyptus essential oil in the water they use for the hot face towels as I have found that to be pleasant in the past.If you want the best, you should absolutely see what this place can do!read more

After seeing my son so unhappy after EVERY haircut I took a chance and brought him to Mattew Alain after reading soooo many 5 star reviews. I gotta tell you, all those reviews are correct. My son was finally smiling after his haircut. They were so welcoming when we got there, like we were old friends. And they really took the time to listen to how this 13 year old wanted his full head of curls cut (not short!) and took their time doing it and showing him different angles multiple times. I went to this place for the first time looking for a haircut for my wedding. I live out of state but got married in Long Island so I needed to find a spot. I tried Lana about a month or so before the date and she helped me tremendously. I showed her a picture and told her what I was looking for and she nailed it. Both her and Matthew offered their expertise on products and styles. I have medium to long length hair so I was looking for a quality scissor cut. With the haircut and beard trim I got exactly what I was looking for. I went again the morning of my wedding and got a fresh haircut, hot towel shave, beard trim, and face mask recommended by Lana. I was truly taken care of by professionals. The level of skill paired with excellent personalities makes this place incredible. I would recommend to anyone.read more

I drive 45 minutes one way to get my haircut from Matthew. He takes the time to hear what style/cut you’d like and is also knowledgeable on the direction of your hair and how to make it look better. If you’re tired of settling on a so so haircut go make an appointment with Matthew. Make sure you schedule an appointment he usually is booked two weeks out!read more

BEST MENS SALON ON LONG ISLAND BY FAR!! Been coming to Matthew since trying all other "top" salons on LI but this is first one to actually cater to men and let me tell you Matthew is unbelievable!Been coming every two weeks for over a year and never plan on leaving.He listens and gives you exactly what you want and can also suggest other options only if you want.His prices are AMAZING for what you get and everything is clearly shown when you book. NO SURPRISES!!If you want a $15 cut then go to the Joe Barber in your town and get a $15 crap cut.Matthew is actually cheaper than any salon I have ever went to.Oh yeah, his fades are seriously ridiculous.You will not be disappointed one bit.
