Description
Astor Place Hairstylists is a barber shop and salon for men, women, and children. It may not look like it from the outside, but this place is huge. They have 40 chairs and a massive staff of barbers and stylists. Therefore, you don't need an appointment, you can walk-in and quickly get service. In addition to haircuts, you can get some highlights or color, perms, hot towel shaves, keratin treatments, and more. On the walls, you'll see a bunch of photos of celebrities that have been there. The staff can speak multiple languages: English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Greek. Farsi, Portuguese.

Always makes sure you are pleased and if you have any adjustments to make, he takes care of it. My Barber is Morales and he is Phenomenal! It's an old school barber that's been around over 40 years. Many of the other hairstylists, barbers, and staff are extremely nice. The prices Morales charges are still affordable post quarantine. Be prepared to have your temperature checked upon arrival and there is an occupation limit, but I'm not sure what the numbers are. Astor Place Hair is probably one of the barbershops in the city. I've been going there for 4 years now and just went since they reopened after being closed due to COVD-19 lockdowns. The experience is extremely safe with temperature checks and plastic coverings between stations to mitigate contact with other customers. Jose is my barber there - he always provides a great cut. I've been going here for maybe 20 years, and I hope it stays around. Scotti is my guy there. He's great. The place has history and charm. Right now they're hurting a little from the quarantine of course. I just went today though, and there was no wait, and it was all set up to be safe, with dividers between chairs, your temperature taken as you walk in, and of course everyone's wearing masks.read more

We've been going to Josephina and Dee for years. Lots of hairstylists to choose from. It's also fun to see the variety of cuts that people get there. Classic cuts and unusual - there's someone to cut your hair however you like it. They do good color also. and it's only $25 for a cut! Great, fun place that has been around forever.read more

I really love and value Astor Place Hairstylists as an institution, but it's important to mention that it really depends on which hairstylist you get. The main point of this review is to say-- steer clear of the hairstylist Bella. I've only had positive experiences at Astor place until today when she cut my hair. She is very warm and sweet, which is why I feel bad writing this review, but i feel it is important to warn people of what may happen when Bella cuts your hair. Bella will disregard your wishes in order to cut your hair how *she* feels is best. Today I ended up with really poorly done layers, when all I asked for was a simple trim. I'm a person who is anxious & unadventurous when it comes to haircuts. I have never requested layers or any other kind of styled hair. I was very simple in my request that I just wanted her to cut off a couple of inches. It was beyond upsetting to realize that she had made her own aesthetic choice for my hair-- one which I did not want or request-- without consulting me or even mentioning what she was doing. On top of that, she cut my hair far shorter than the trim I requested, and the layers (if that's what she was attempting) look terrible so now I have to spend more money to go somewhere else and get it fixed. I have a friend who had a bad Astor place experience, but I couldn't remember who it was that cut her hair. After this happened, I asked my friend if she remembered the name of the woman who butchered her hair. Turns out, it was the same hairstylist-- Bella. She is a really kind person but if she cuts your hair, make sure to give her the most explicit instructions possible or she will go off script and do whatever she wants to your hair. Such an incredibly frustrating and violating experience.Go to Astor place hair, but do not go to Bella. If you do go to Bella, just be careful and be very very very clear about what you want. Don't give her room to improvise without your permission.read more

I have been coming to Astor for 40 years & Jose has cut my hair for the last 15 years or more Astir is a fun place & Jose is very professional & a very good man He always says after a haircut Robert “you look 10 years younger” That would make me 67 instead of 77 but what I also like about Jose is his warm personality. When I still lived in NYC, Astor Place was the only place I’d go to get my haircut. I averaged one a month for over 20 years.I would only see one barber … Valentino.He’s a wonderful man and a good soul.If you were having a lousy day, you’d be amazed what a haircut and a good conversation will do to pick up your day.He was probably my all time favorite barber.The barbershops that I have up where I live now don’t come close in comparison to the beautiful organized chaos that IS Astor Place!read more

Perfect for a quick trim. They are inexpensive and always do a decent job. And they have enough hair cutters that you don't need an appointment; stop in and they will have you in someone's chair within moments. Nothing too fancy, but perfect for keeping your mane under control.Be aware; they are a CASH ONLY establishment. He did such a great job on my hair that he became my favorite and I won't choose anyone else there.Jose is an artist and you will look in the mirror and be satisfied with the results. On a recent trip back to NYC, I walked thru Soho and the East Village. Many of the places I knew, Tower Records & Tower Books were no longer there and St Marks Place was very different. I remember getting my haircut in this place in 1977, at 14 years old, when they only had 5 or 6 Barber chairs and the owner was actually still cutting hair. I have been seeing IRMA at Astor Place hair for over 10 years for a simple reason: she does a great job. In the current iteration of my hair style she adds three colors to my hair in addition to a great cut. First she colors most of it brown, then she adds blond highlights and she finishes it off with a splash of bright pink which everyone loves. TLDR: great for a simple trim, in and out in under an hour, I felt heard in my requests, $40 for my below shoulder length hair, and I got what I needed!What an iconic piece of NYC. The vibe here makes you feel like you’re in the heart of the city. I needed a trim - wasn’t interested in anything fancy, just healthier ends. I walked in on a weekday afternoon and they immediately matched me up with Narcy. She’s a sweetheart! She washed my hair (so relaxing), then got to work. We did a simple straight cut, I’d asked for 1/2 inch off as I’m going for length but she advised me to go for a whole inch, as another one of my goals is to have my hair be all the same length. I’m growing out from a buzz cut and she mentioned it was very uneven in the back, so I agreed and we went for it. She stuck to the agreed 1” and no more! After the cut she methodically and thoroughly blow dried my hair and added some argan oil so I could see how straight the line in the back was after my trim.I did wish my hair had been conditioned before cutting, only shampoo was done, and she was perhaps rougher than I would have been combing out my own hair when wet, but again, I didn’t come here for a spa experience so I felt ok about everything. I’ll bring my own heat protectant next time, no biggie. And my hair feels amazing and healthier after, so all is well!read more

My stylist is Suzy.She is Greek.I've been getting her to cut, color and highlight my hair for a long time and the results have always exceeded my expectations.She can work with all hair types, so I would recommend her for Asians too.All of the stylists at this salon are highly experienced, and although most of the customers are older, the stylists' techniques are by no means outdated, so it is recommended for younger people as well.read more

I’ve been going to Astor Place Hair for many years, and get great hair styles and color, that I’m very happy with.Astor Place has maintained its eclectic character, with a variety of stylists and customers, which is salt of the earth, NYC.So much more interesting than chic salons.But remember, cash only.I recommend the stylist, Irma, she’s always upbeat, friendly and is very skilled. She consistently gives a great cut and blow dry that really lasts. She does beautiful color, and when I get my hair highlighted by her, she’s very meticulous, and I receive many compliments. Like with all hairstylists, you must communicate what you want clearly before starting, pictures are a good guide.One drawback are the uncomfortable chairs where you get your hair washed, and also it would be nice if there was some kind of refreshments. Atmosphere wise, It’s not a high end beauty salon, but you do get lovely quality hair services, and I’m glad to have found Irma.read more
