In 2014, Mitch Cohen opened The Bearded Barber in his hometown of Scotch Plains. They specialize in men's hairstyling, beard design, and hot towel shaves. Most experiences are quite positive here.

These guys are the real deal. Amazing blade work, top of the line equipment including facial steamer for those extra tight fades. Amazing freehand work also. The owner is a stand up guy, his wife does coloring and styling and they are a wonderful young couple. You can find tons of pictures of their work on their Facebook and other social media. By far the best place around and definitely one of the best in NJ. Try them out!read more

It is a barber shop that relies on appointments not first come first serve. Great if your a local or existing customer. It is clean and seemed casually comfortable. To me it was more like a salon than a barbershop. Wasn't able to come back in 3 hours to actually get a haircut so I can't comment on that aspect.read more

The ReviewThis is my shop! Mitch runs a great shop for us bearded folk, but don’t let the name confuse you. They cut kids (with or without beards), and women (also with or without beards). All jokes aside, my barber/stylist is Amanda B. I’ve been leaving my beard up to her for the last year or so and I’m happy I made the leap. Its a 30 min commute just to get this cut, but if you’ve ever had your yeard+ mangled or cut poorly, you’ll understand that consistency and technique is valued over any commute time. You can’t trust just anyone with your beard. Your cuts will be sharp and you’ll be guaranteed a great conversation if that’s what you’re into.LogisticsThe shop has recently been moved/remodeled and has a nice open clean feel to it. They have parking behind the shop, but you can also find parking on the street relatively easily. Prior to the pandemic, on most days you’d have to make an appointment online or over the phone. Currently, I believe you HAVE to make an appointment online or by phone, both of which are easy options. There is a lateness policy that they abide by so make sure to be on time as they are courteous of other patrons time and appointments as well. Everyone is masked up and aware of their surroundings in this shop so in terms of safety you are good to go.Final WordsObviously, you’re reading this review because you may be on the fence, I empathize wholeheartedly, but give it a shot, you won’t be let down. I really like this place. My family just moved to the area recently and I’ve been looking for a place to get a good cut. After getting 4 solid haircuts, I decided it was time to trust them with my 3 year old sons hair He hates getting his haircut with a passion. Kristen did a really nice job and she even got him to stop crying and have some fun during the process. He was so excited we had to FaceTime everyone on my phone to show them his “awesome new cut!”. I've been going here for about 3 years since I moved to the area. My hair's been cut by Mitch, Kristen, & Amanda during this period. All have done an excellent job. Amanda normally cuts my hair these days - I don't even need to tell her what to do anymore. She knows my usual and gets it right each time. I appreciate the flexible later hours on Friday. Extra points to the cleanliness of the shop esp during the past year's situation. They're also very active with the local community (eg Toys for Tots collection around the holidays) which is also appreciated in any small business.read more

I keep finding myself coming back here. I have been to many barbers in Scotch Plains and a few out of town, but none really compare to the Bearded Barber. Extremely quality and precise product, and always willing to work with you. Having gone there for multiple years, I always look forward to seeing the barbers and talking with them. I think this barber demonstrates a perfect balance between professional and personal. I feel like I am part of a family there, and the product is always worth it.read more

I’ve been going to the Bearded Barber for years now and it’s definitely the best barber shop that I’ve ever been to. Mitch (the owner) is absolutely meticulous about his haircuts and he’s not satisfied unless you’re completely satisfied. What’s amazing is how he remembers exactly how you like your haircut from previous cuts (and always reviews that before starting each time). I also love how they take appointments- gone are the days of long waits at the barber or going at strange times in order to not have to wait. Mitch and his wife Kristen care about each of their clients as well as the community as a whole and that’s obvious in how they run their business. I have never had a barber my entire life because my father always buzzed my head at home. I have had longer hair over the last 10 years and in the last year or so have grown a large and in charge beard. I went to Mitch (owner) on the recommendation of a friend of mine because i needed to clean up my look for a wedding i was participating in. This man made me feel like a million bucks and had GREAT conversation throughout which made me feel all the more comfortable during my time in the chair.
