Description

The Philadelphia Barber Company is a modern high end barber shop born from an industrial warehouse space under the El in Northern Liberties, in one of the cities most vibrant neighborhoods. They have educated barbers that specialize in all the latest styles, fades, undercuts, side parts, pompadours, and everything in between. Besides providing your classic barbershop services, they try to bring in local artists to show off their work and occasionally have live music in the shop. While you are there, feel free to enjoy a beer or shot of whiskey.

I have been coming here for a year now but never felt the need to do a review until the incident that happened with me today.I had an appointment for bear trim and a haircut (45min booking) from 11am until 11:45am. I was delayed getting there and called them to inform them of the delay and walked in at 11:10am. They informed me that they will not have time to do both the beard and a haircut which was fair since it was my fault I was 10 minutes late so I chose to go with a beard trim.apparently they double booked another appointment at 11:30am which leaves me with only 20 minutes for my appointment and that is 15 min short to my actually booking. The barber is super nice but he was rushing so much that he nicked me twice on my neck and my beard was not even and had to tell him before I leave to fix it.I always get a straight edge shave with my beard trim but he told me he does not have time today since his next appointment is already here. The appointment that was double booked. When I said to the staff this is unacceptable, and that this is my time they just stared at me and said we will relay your concerns to management.It is fair to say that is not the treatment I was expecting. And I get it it is my fault I was 10 minutes late but I paid for that by not getting a haircut. The frustrating part was the fact that I was so rushed with my beard trim, even though I was supposed to have 35 minutes left for my appointment but that didn’t happen. Still they made me pay the full beard trim amount even though I did not get a straight edge shave and I was rushed and the barber cut me twice on my neck.After posting this, I received a call an hour later with no apology but a defensive excuse of why they were rushing me and said that due to my poor review, I am not a good fit to come to their shop anymore. A year of being a dedicated customer since I moved to philly and that is the treatment I get.read more

They are doing everything perfectly! The second you walk in, you're greeted with a smile and a refreshment. Next, you can sift through some old-school comics and watch whatever incredible movie they have playing on the TVs while you wait. They are very efficient with their time, so the only "waiting" you'll do is if you arrive early for your appointment. I get my hair cut by Ken, one of the co-founders, and he does a phenomenal job at both cutting my hair and giving me advice on how to better take care of it. Last cut, he took the time to walk me through everything about hair health: how often to shampoo, how to better dry it after a shower, the proper directions to brush it, how to better utilize my hairdryer, recommended product to add, and so much more. I love their Hemlock products. Ken rocks, and I'm so lucky he's my barber. He truly cares!Every worker and client at the Philadelphia Barber Co just seems so happy to be there. I was visiting from out of town and Andrew was my barber. Andrew did an amazing job and I rate Andrew 5/5. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversations with him and he did a great job cutting my hair.Andrew is the only reason I am not giving this business 1 star. Unfortunately, my overall experience was not pleasant.I walked into the shop and there was no one at the front desk which is ok because everyone was busy. Lauren (manager) was at the front door working on something with the door. Since no one said anything when I walked in, I proceed to head towards the couch. It was then that Lauren told me that I needed to check in at the front desk with Monique.I informed her I checked in online (my previous barber shop only required check in at the desk if you were a walk in so I incorrectly assumed making an appointment online was the same as checking in).It was then that Lauren (manager) very sarcastically stated, "Oh wowwwww. I've never heard of anyone checking in online before. I didn't know that was possible."I apologized to her and told her that this was my first time here. I checked in with Monique and she was nice and respectful.However, my experience with Lauren set off the vibe completely. It is unfortunate to see this is how a manager treats their customers when they walk in, especially when it is their first time. Jess was great. Thanks for the haircut and conversation. The owner was funny. He was eating two slices of pizza and talking about how his beard made him want to use a fork to eat it. Atmosphere was great. Kind, friendly, professional, and organized. I see some people didn't like it. That's a head scratcher to me. (shrug) I turned down the beer on tap (is it free?) I had to get to work afterwards. But definitely appreciate the nice touches making this shop unique and welcoming. Skate videos! My barber was 10 minutes late, they also boasted how good they are at their job. The results do not show that they are competent in their craft. I am actually upset having to go out to the bars tonight with this haircut. They spent the entire time on the fade and a few minutes with the scissors and it’s horrible. Overall, a solid barbershop. I've been to about 4 different staff members and all of them did a good job. Cool environment. The downsides are that they lack availability, likely because they offer these "clean up" slots. If you have a busy schedule or have to work around your work schedule, good luck. Also, kind of pricey for the value.What prompted me to write this review is the "Clean up" service that they offer. Its 15 min, and $20. I'm going out of town and couldn't find an actual haircut slot, but I really only need a hold-me -over - nothing to the top, or styling or anything. Well, we had 15 minutes. I asked if she could just clean up my neck and take the sides in a little tighter. Didn't really think this was a big ask, considering its the price of an actual haircut in the rest of the world. She said "oh actually you got the clean up, so we just trim the edges around the back". I felt like leaving, since I can ask someone to do that in 2 minutes for free. Since I already blocked off time for work and walked all the way over there, I sat while she kept pretending to do extra work around my neckline to fill up 15 minutes. probably the biggest waste of time and money I'll have all of this year.This would all be fine, if I had any idea what I was getting into when scheduling, it would be on me. Online it's vague - "clean up". I found out the hard way.read more

not really understanding all these great reviews. I went twice and wasn't impressed either time. first time was better than the second, but both appointments were rushed to finish within a 30 minute time slot. didn't get a neck shave which is supposed to be included (my mask did not interfere). also asked to get length cut from the top, both times, and only got the sides and back done. don't come in here with a specific hairstyle in mind because you'll get whatever the barber thinks is best. the end result is just an OK cut that, for the money, isn't worth it. I'll be crossing the bridge to NJ for haircuts from now onread more
